RICHMOND, VA – Virginia House of Delegates Chairman Mark L. Cole (R-Spotsylvania) and Senate of Virginia Chairwoman Jill H. Vogel (R-Fauquier) today announced a joint meeting of the Privileges and Elections Committees to be held on Thursday, October 13, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. in House Room D. The joint committee will discuss election readiness, concerns of local registrars, and recent reports of voter fraud. The agenda can be found here.
“With one month remaining until the general election, we have learned that a number of registrars are concerned about the overall state of the Commonwealth’s election readiness,” said Chairman Cole. “Registrars are concerned about the status of the Department of Elections VERIS system, the backlog of voter registrations and absentee ballot applications, and a lack of support or guidance from the Department on key issues. We’ve also had multiple high-profile instances of voter fraud reported recently. The joint committee meeting will provide members of the General Assembly and the public an important opportunity to hear how the Commonwealth is preparing for the upcoming election. Registrars will be given an opportunity to share their concerns and we will ask the Department of Elections to share the status of its efforts to prepare for and secure the integrity of the election.”
“Our local voter registrars are deeply concerned about the state of the Commonwealth’s election readiness,” said Chairwoman Vogel. “These are widespread concerns directly related to the highly technical administration of an election. Virginia’s registrars are dedicated public servants who work every day to ensure the smooth and secure operation of our elections. We need to listen to their concerns. Open, fair, free, and secure elections are fundamental to our representative democracy. We cannot afford to be unprepared onNovember 8. This hearing gives us an opportunity to discuss the state of our election preparations and ensure that we are ready to go on Election Day.”
