House Republican Leader Todd Gilbert issued the following statement:
“Governor Northam’s move to intervene in the House discussion over redistricting is confusing. Governors have no role in amending the Constitution, and the amendment itself cannot be changed at this point without restarting the entire process, killing nonpartisan redistricting for a decade.
“Muddying the waters at this point with new legislation is not helpful, and could well be an attempt to derail the amendment at the last minute. I hope that is not the case. The House Privileges and Elections Committee should send Senate Joint Resolution 18 to the floor for a vote on Tuesday.”
