The Virginia House Republican Caucus on Sunday unanimously elected its leadership team for the upcoming General Assembly and nominated Del. Todd Gilbert, R-Shenandoah, to serve as Speaker. Del. Terry Kilgore, R-Scott, will serve as House Majority Leader, Caucus Chair Del. Kathy Byron, R-Bedford, was elected to her second term, and Del. Jay Leftwich, R-Chesapeake, was elected House Majority Whip for a second term.

“I am proud to serve with and lead a strong and united Republican majority as we look toward the 2022 General Assembly session and beyond,” said Speaker-designee Todd Gilbert. “I am humbled by the vote of trust and confidence by my colleagues. When we were in the minority, no one believed that we could return to where we are now. But we rallied together, worked together, and won together. I could not be more proud to be a member, let alone the leader, of this caucus.”

“The House of Delegates holds a special place in the history of our Commonwealth, and indeed our nation. It is my goal to ensure the body upholds the practices and traditions that have served it so well for much of that time. That means a respect for our rules, respect for debate, and respect for every member elected to this body.”

“I am grateful to my colleagues for their support as Majority Leader and look forward to serving Speaker-designee Gilbert and the Republican caucus,” said Majority Leader Terry Kilgore. “As Majority Leader, I look forward to helping chart a policy agenda that works for all Virginians. While we will debate our colleagues on the other side of the aisle, we will also work with them when we can to ensure the best possible policy outcomes for every Virginian. Reasoned debate and compromise should and will always have a place in the oldest continuing legislative body in the Western hemisphere.”

““The task before us is not small, but I could not ask for a better team to work with to make it happen,” said House Republican Caucus Chair Kathy Byron. It is an honor to continue to serve my friends and colleagues as Chair of the House Republican Caucus and I look forward to collaborating with Speaker-designate Gilbert and our entire team as we advance our shared conservative values.”

I am honored to continue serving our Caucus as Whip and am excited about what our majority will accomplish,” said House Republican Whip Jay Leftwich. “The past two years have been challenging for our caucus, but I’m proud of the way we came together to pursue our shared values, and the way we came together to overcome adversity to return to the majority. It’s time to get to work for the people of the Commonwealth.”
